Catholic faithfuls in the Diocese of Auchi, Edo State, have again taken to social media to celebrate Monsignor Thomas Oleghe who attained the age of 101 years on Saturday.
Oleghe, who is arguably the oldest Catholic priest in Nigeria, is said to be still very active in the church’s spiritual activities despite his old age.
PlatinumPost reports that the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, Most Reverend Gabriel Dunia as well as other priests had last year rolled out the drums to celebrate the centenary birthday thanksgiving of Oleghe.
The event also temporarily reunited Governor Godwin Obaseki and former national chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, after the bitter 2020 Edo gubernatorial election, as they were on ground to grace the event in Auchi.
Speaking on the 101 years birthday, a Catholic priest, Father Daniel, said Oleghe dedication to the work of God deserve emulation.
“MONSIGNOR THOMAS OLEGHE IS 101 YEAR OLD TODAY. Oleghe is the oldest Catholic priest in Edo State. He is of the Diocese of Auchi and native of Igiode, Etsako East LGA, Edo State. He is said to be the Oldest priest in Nigeria at present.
“He is still very much active with his priestly prayers and masses. At this age he wakes up as early as 4am for his morning adoration, prayers and mass and does the same at 4pm with twenty decades of the rosary. This indeed is a virtue to emulate. There is hope for all of us to rise and take responsibility for our health and life.
“We stand upon the grace of life span that he carries to declare and decree that we shall not die prematurely in the name of Jesus.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!,” Father Daniel wrote on his Facebook page.
On his part, a Facebook user, Jeffrey Okpokudo, wrote : “Happy birthday Padre! To have lived this long is a fulfilment of God’s promises that those who serve Him in truth and in spirit shall be blessed with long life and good health. Congratulations to a humble servant of God.”
“I celebrate this papa, may God help us the younger generation to see plenty to emulate from him. May our lady mother of priests continue to shield him. Thanks Father Daniel,” Bature Imhoudu said.
